The Mobile District is proud of its environmental achievements. Environmental Sustainment is a critical aspect of each project we manage - from construction and dredging to flood control.

The Tanks to Reef Program is an exceptional program of cooperation between federal and state agencies which added obsolete tanks to a one-thousand square mile artificial reef zone off the coast of Alabama The tanks were made environmentally safe before they were dropped. Obsolete tanks were donated to Alabama rather than being sold as scrap for $2,500 each. The artificial reefs are expected to increase the fish populations off the coast which will eventually show a gain in revenue in fishing. Over 100 tanks will make-up the reef.

Gaillard Island in Mobile Bay where a manmade dredge disposal site has become home to 16,000 shorebirds and seabirds including the Brown Pelican which had disappeared from Alabama in the late 1800's.

The Tennesee-Tombigbee Wildlife Mitigation Program where we are purchasing 88,000 acres in Mississippi and Alabama to mitigate for the construction and operation of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. These lands will be managed extensively for wildlife, fishing and other public recreational use.
