Answer

Dogs can be susceptible to avian influenza viruses, and there is a report of at least one canine infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus in 2004. Other carnivore species (e.g. cats, tigers, leopards, stone martens) have also been infected. Despite the low probability of H5N1 infection in domestic animals, the possibility of humans acquiring H5N1 infection from direct contact with infected cats and dogs warrants concern and highlights the need for monitoring domestic animals during H5N1 outbreaks in the future.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is coordinating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), veterinary associations, and other partners domestically and internationally on this issue and will provide additional information to the public as it becomes available.
