Can dogs be infected with avian influenza?

Katherine Feldman, DVM
University of Maryland

Animals shelters, doggy day cares, grooming facilities, these are all place where  animals can congregate and places where animals can congregate are good places where disease can be transmitted whether it’s avian influenza h5n1 or any other infectious disease.  So if you go to those places practice thorough hand washing. After handling any animal make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. In the event an animal looks sick make sure that animal gets appropriate veterinary care.
