Romero, Mitre suspended 50 games for using banned substances

NEW YORK -- Phillies reliever J.C. Romero was suspended for the first 50 games of next season on Tuesday after testing positive for a banned substance contained in a supplement developed by convicted BALCO chemist Patrick Arnold.

Yankees minor league pitcher Sergio Mitre also was suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned substance in an over-the-counter supplement.

The suspensions, upheld by arbitrator Stephen Goldberg, triggered an angry response from the Major League Baseball Players Association.

"We strongly disagree with the commissioner's discipline and with the arbitrator's decision," Michael Weiner, the union's general counsel, said in a statement. "Mitre and Romero both legally purchased nutritional supplements from national chain stores in the United States. Nothing on the labels of those supplements indicated that they contained a trace amount of a substance prohibited under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program."

Rob Manfred, executive vice president of labor relations in the commissioner's office, said the players were at fault.

"Certainly Major League Baseball along with the players' association has consistently told players there's risk associated with nutritional substances purchased over the counter," Manfred said.

Manfred said the players failed to use supplements that had been approved under a certification program the sport began in 2006, and that Phillies strength and conditioning coordinator Dong Lien had warned Romero not to use the supplement. Posters in each major league clubhouse give players a hot line to call to check on substances, and Manfred said Romero did not use the hot line.

Weiner saw it differently.

"Their unknowing actions plainly are distinguishable from those of a person who intentionally used an illegal performance-enhancing substance," he said.

Romero, who earned two wins in Philadelphia's World Series victory over Tampa Bay last season, used 6-OXO, developed by Ergopharm, which is led by Arnold. The company's website touts it as "the new gold standard for testosterone elevation."

Arnold pleaded guilty in 2006 to one count of conspiracy to distribute steroids as part of the federal prosecution of the Bay Area Laboratory-Cooperative. Arnold, who created the previously undetectable steroid "the clear," was sentenced to three months in prison and three months' home confinement

Mitre tested positive for Halodrol.

Both supplements contain Androstenetrione as a listed ingredient and apparently were contaminated with Androstenedione, the substance Mark McGwire used in the 1990s. While Androstenedione was banned by baseball in 2004, Androstenetrione is not specifically listed as a prohibited substance.

OK I will be first to admit, I'm a Phils fan so I will be biased. However I find myself sitting here thinking if this were Santana or Dimitri Young someone that we place against a lot I'd still think they were ripped off.

I'm all against doping, steriods and the such, but if the Players Union told players this was an OK substance that you can get at a GNC. As a player, I would be ...(more)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Romero got suspended for something like this when he played for the Twins.  I thought that 2 offenses meant 100 games out.  Anyone know anything about this?

What are the details of being suspended... Does anyone know if they are allowed to pitch in the minors during their suspension?

Ignorance was no excuse!

Enough said^^

The NFL should be embarrassed that their suspensions over star caps was not upheld...

I can't believe that MLB allowed him to pitch in the regular season & in the WORLD SERIES. He failed a drug test not once but TWICE. If I were a Rays fan I would be calling for Seilg's job for allowing him to pitch and getting two wins in the World Series. Also I would be saying the World Series was tainted!

Also for

This does not taint the world series if it is not a substance that gives him an inherient advantage over the apposing hitter. Meaning if it is something along the lines of a water pill like earlier this year in the NFL than no it does not taint the WS. But if it was indeed steriods than yes it does a little bit. Now is thier any way of telling if this would of been the deal breaker no, so no on ...(more)

What irks me about drug suspensions is the time frame.  If this went before arbitration in October, this likely means Romero tested positive before the World Series.  That being said, how can any major sport allow an athlete to test positive for a banned substance and continue to play?

Think in the Olympics....for an example, suppose Michael Phelps tested positive for steroids ...(more)

You are a Major League Baseball player.

You make millions.

You should know what is going into your body. Period.

Why is it always never your fault but some one else who is to blame.

Get over it.

Espn link to an article that says Romero took 6-oxo supplement. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/
story?id=3813666

6-oxo is a supplement that increases the % of active testosterone in blood by inhibiting estrogen.  For those who aren't  aware of what this means I will explain as best I can.

It sounds like the union is getting ready to challenge and/or push back against the MLB drug testing.

Telling their members that anything you can buy at GNC is OK is clearly a stupid thing to state.  There is no testing on any of the snake oil products they sell there.  In some states you can now buy ephedra again.  There is clearly a difference between w ...(more)
