Giambi nearing deal to return to where career began in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jason Giambi might just finish his career where it began more than a decade ago.

The free-agent first baseman was nearing a deal Tuesday to return to the Oakland Athletics nearly 14 years after making his debut with the club, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press because the contract hasn't been completed. The addition of Giambi would be the second big offseason acquisition by general manager Billy Beane, who made a trade with Colorado for star outfielder Matt Holliday back in November.

Giambi, who turns 38 on Thursday, spent the past seven seasons with the Yankees. New York declined its 2009 $22 million option for him after last season.

Oakland announced in early November that Bob Alejo would become its new director of strength and conditioning -- a sign Giambi might be next to come back and return to his roots. Alejo served as the A's strength and conditioning coach from 1993-01 and followed Giambi to the Yankees, working for Giambi personally and for the team during some years.

Giambi won the AL MVP for Oakland in 2000, then left for New York following the 2001 campaign. He enjoyed each return visit to the Bay Area, seeing old friends and making trips to the popular California chain of In-N-Out Burger. He said he tried to open an In-N-Out in New York to no avail.

Giambi, a second-round draft pick by the A's in 1992, is a career .286 hitter in 14 big league seasons. He made his major league debut for Oakland on May 8, 1995.

Giambi batted .247 with 32 home runs and 96 RBI in 2008 for the Yankees, who missed the playoffs despite their $200 million payroll after a run of 13 consecutive postseason appearances. That's just one shy of the record set by the Atlanta Braves from 1991-05.

...about the City of Oakland when he left for the Yankees, he's not welcome here, as far as I'm concerned.  I hope he turns out to be a miserable failure back in Oakland.

Giambi is washed up. I hate the Yankees and loved watching him frustrate fans on a regular basis with his horrible hitting. He has decent enough HR/RBI numbers (but remember, he's on the Yankees, there's often someone on base), but he's only broke around .250 like once in the past 6 years. He's on the decline and whoever gets him now is ju ...(more)

A's feel he is cheaper than Dunn with somewhat similar power, but does know how to draw a base on balls.  Luckily I got him in my keeperleague for a buck a year. He is destined to hit .230 if lucky and may get 70 -80 rbi's depending if he bats ahead or behind holiday  (being if holiday plays with the A's for a full season)

I think its a great move!  Now have him bat behind Holliday and the A's have a nice 1-2 punch in the middle of there order.  They could have done alot worst than Giambi.  Now he has something to prove to everyone and I expect a big year from him...

Billy Beane has potentially negotiated another 'Coup De Tait' in securing the services of  "The Giambino."

He could be worth a 30/100 a/la Matty Stairs, what with his return to Oakland.

He will certainly be under the radar, and combined with a festive 'Holliday', perhaps a prodigious 3-4 punch combined.

Thank you to B. Beane and the right kind of 'Beanebal ...(more)

....but I do. After all the other shlubs refused to admit that they juiced, he was one of the few who was willing to admit he made a mistake. Since the beginnings of steroids its been the unwritten rule to never, ever admit doing it. Esapecially when caught.  He should donate a portion of his money to educate others about steroid abuse, all the kids know now is that it is a good way t ...(more)

I am in a long-term keeper fantasy baseball league, and I have had the luxury of owning both Albert Pujols and Jason Giambi.  And I tell you this...Giambi was written off 3 years ago after the steroids fiasco.  But Giambi has continued to deliver as ...(more)
