Starting a Service-learning Program

A national study of Learn and Serve America programs suggests that effective service-learning programs improve academic grades, increase attendance in school, and develop personal and social responsibility. Whether the goal is academic improvement, personal development, or both, students can learn:

Apple critical thinking   Apple communication
Apple teamwork   Apple civic responsibility
Apple mathematical reasoning   Apple problem solving
Apple public speaking   Apple vocational skills
Apple computer skills   Apple scientific method
Apple research and analysis skills

If your school has not yet developed a service-learning curriculum, now is the time. Learn and Serve America, one of the programs of the Corporation for National and Community Service, has developed a number of resources to make it easy. Students in Service to America (SISTA) is a great resource, providing access to ideas, toolkits, and curriculum sources.
