The Commission of the African Union (AU) is following with great concern the prevailing situation in the Gaza Strip.
The Commission strongly condemns the ongoing air raids on the Gaza Strip by Israel, since 27 December 2008, which has resulted so far in the death of more than 300 Palestinians, while about 1,000 others, including women and children, have been injured. Communiqué (ar/en)

African Union Signs MoU with the World Health Organization
Geneva, 19th December 2008 - A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) was signed today at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva. The MOU defines the modalities of cooperation between the two bodies in support of Africa’s efforts to combat trypanosomiasis. Trypanosomiasis is a severe disease of man and domestic animals, transmitted by tsetse flies, which occurs in 37 African countries where it causes death, debility, diminished productivity and massive economic losses and is a serious constraint to socio-economic development.

Addis Ababa, 10 December 2008 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Jean Ping and the Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Mr. Joachim Von Braun, today Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The MoU was aimed at developing a strategic partnership between the Commission (Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture) and IFPRI. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Mrs. Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture of the AUC and members of the bureau of the Food Policy Research Institute, along side officials of the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture.

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping,
continues to follow with great concern the situation in Somalia in light of the
worsening insecurity and the impending withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops, the
latter in conformity with the relevant provisions of the landmark Agreement
signed in Djibouti, on 19 August 2008, between the Transitional Federal
Government (TFG) of Somalia and the Alliance for the re-liberation of Somalia
(ARS).

GERMANY SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH THE AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION TO CONSTRUCT NEW OFFICE BUILDING FOR PEACE AND SECURITY

Addis Ababa, 21 November 2008 - The German Ambassador to Addis Ababa, H.E. Claas-Dieter Knoop, and the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E Erastus Mwencha, on Friday 21 November 2008, at the headquarters of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, signed an agreement for the construction of a new building that will accommodate all the offices of the African Union’s Peace and Security Department.

French Assistance for the Strengthening of ECOSOCC
Addis Ababa, Friday 14 November 2008 - The African Union Commission (CIDO Department) and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the French Republic, on 15 October 2008 signed a protocol agreement on the grant of financial assistance to the Citizens and Diaspora Directorate of the Commission to strengthen the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union (ECOSOCC) as well as the Diaspora programme of the Union amounting to 270,000 Euros which will be used to strengthen its activities.
