African Americans in Idaho
|
While African Americans makes up the smallest proporition of Idaho's ethnic populations, it is one of the fastest growing segments. It also has a history that dates back to before Idaho became a state.
The first and perhaps the best-known of African Americans in Idaho was York, who served as William Clark's personal servant on the Lewis-Clark expedition. He was followed over the years by other black explorers, trappers, miners and settlers. Today that extends to politicians, community leaders and educators.
According to U.S. census estimates, the African American community in Idaho is expected to continue to grow in the future. I have been pleased to honor Idaho's African Americans in Congressional Record Statements, marking their contributions to our state and our nation. Click on the statement name to read: Honoring Black History Month and Honoring Mamie Oliver.
