NRCS Holds State Technical Committee Meeting

Annapolis, MD ---December 28, 2006, --- Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, Maryland State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), today announced that NRCS will hold a meeting of the Maryland State Technical Committee on Friday, January 12, 2007, at 9:00 am. The meeting will be held at the NRCS State Office in the downstairs conference room, 339 Busch’s Frontage Road, Suite 205, Annapolis, Maryland 21409.

NRCS RC&D Councils Host Energy Conservation Conference for Farmers

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 28, 2006) --- Maryland farmers and conservation officials can learn about new trends in “Energy Conservation Opportunities on the Farm” during a day-long conference scheduled for Wednesday, December 13, 2006 in Annapolis, Maryland. The conference is sponsored by the National Association of Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Councils, Delaware and Maryland RC&D Councils and Maryland and Delaware Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Application Period Open for Maryland Farms to Apply for NRCS Wetlands Restoration Program

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 17, 2006) --- “Farmers and landowners interested in restoring or enhancing wetland habitat should contact their local office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)”, said Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, NRCS State Conservationist. NRCS has opened the application period for applications for financial assistance through the USDA Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP).

NRCS Maryland Opens Application Period For AMA Conservation Funding For Maryland Farmers

Annapolis, MD, November 17, 2006 --- Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland, announced that Maryland is now accepting applications for consideration for financial assistance for applying conservation practices through the FY07 USDA Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) Program. AMA helps producers adopt conservation practices and investment strategies that will reduce or mitigate risks to their agricultural enterprises.

NRCS Maryland Announces Application Period for Participation in EQIP Conservation Funding

Annapolis, MD, November 8, 2006 ---Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland, announced the opening of the application period for consideration for financial assistance funding for Maryland’s farmers through the USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), part of the 2002 Farm Bill. NRCS has leadership responsibility within USDA for implementing EQIP.

Farmers interested in installing conservation practices through EQIP should contact their local NRCS or Soil Conservation District office, located at USDA Service Centers, for more information on the eligible conservation practices, the application process, and receiving conservation assistance through EQIP. Although, the application period for EQIP is continuous, NRCS sets dates to rank received applications based on environmental benefits. The first ranking period will cover all FY07 EQIP applications received by December 15, 2006.

NRCS Maryland Opens Application Period for FY07 USDA Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program Funds

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 8, 2006) --- Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State Conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced the opening of the application period for Maryland’s farmers to apply for conservation funding through USDA’s Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).

Landowners interested in filing an application for funding consideration through WHIP should immediately contact their local NRCS or Soil Conservation District office located at USDA Service Centers. Applications are accepted continuously throughout the year. On December 15, 2006, applications which have been submitted will be ranked according to criteria that will determine which proposals offer the most wildlife habitat benefits for funding. A second application period may occur if conservation funds remain.

NRCS Soils Staff Conduct Tours for World Soils Conference

NRCS soils staff in Maryland and Delaware were asked to help develop and host a pre-conference tour throughout the Delmarva and Southern Maryland for the 18th World Congress of Soil Science.   The tour was conducted on July 7th and 8th, 2006.

NRCS Strategic Plan Focuses on "Productive Lands--Healthy Environment"

I served on the partnership committee which created the Strategic Plan and can say with pride that this forward-looking and far-reaching plan challenges us to reformulate some past approaches and develop and adopt new approaches.

NRCS Provides $2.9 Million to Protect Maryland Farmland

Annapolis, MD (April 14, 2006) -- “Maryland conservation partners and land preservation groups have until May 11, 2006 to apply for $2,888,651 in conservation funds through the 2002 Farm Bill’s Farm and Ranchland Protection Program”, said Virginia (Ginger) L. USDA Provides More Than $70 Million to Protect Farm and Ranch Lands

WASHINGTON, April 10, 2006--USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is seeking proposals from state, federally recognized tribal and local governments and non-governmental organizations interested in working together to acquire conservation easements on farms and ranches. NRCS State Offices must receive proposals by 5:00 p.m. EDT on May 11, 2006. NRCS is expected to announce final project selections in June.

Maryland Farmers Have Until April 21st to Apply for USDA Conservation Funds to Restore Wetland Habitat

Annapolis, MD (April 6, 2006) --- “Farmers and landowners interested in restoring or enhancing wetland habitat have until April 21, 2006 to apply for conservation funds through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP)," said Mark Rose, Assistant State Conservationist for Programs at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland and the WRP Program Manager.

NRCS Accepting Applications Until April 7th To Help Farmers Transition to Organic Farming

Annapolis, Maryland (March 28, 2006) --- Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland, announced that she is extending the application period through April 7, 2006 for $451,235 in conservation funding through the Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) Program.  AMA helps mitigate a farmer’s risk of transitioning to organic production and its related water quality concerns such as sedimentation, nutrients, soil quality, and pesticides.

USDA Provides Up To $1.7 Million for Fish and Wildlife Habitat Improvements

March 23, 2006—USDA will provide up to $1.7 million for competitive grants to develop and evaluate technological tools for fish and wildlife habitat improvements. Proposals for grants will be accepted from state and local governments, federally recognized tribes and non-governmental organizations through April 27, 2006.  Grants will range from $10,000 to $200,000. Selected applicants may receive up to 50 percent of the project costs. Limited resource and beginning farmers and ranchers, tribes and community-based organizations representing these groups can obtain up to 75 percent of project matching funds. Applicants will be asked how they will develop, test, implement and transfer innovative solutions that benefit fish and wildlife.

Sign-up Now Open for $451,235 in AMA Conservation Funding to Help Maryland Farmers Transition to Organic Farming

Murphy, State Conservationist for the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland, announced that Maryland received $451,235 in fiscal year 2006 conservation funding through USDA Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) Program. NRCS has leadership responsibility for implementing AMA.

The application process to receive consideration for AMA funds begins at the local County NRCS or Soil Conservation District Office. The sign-up period closes on March 31, 2006 so interested farmers should immediately contact these offices for more information on eligible conservation practices, the application process, and receiving conservation assistance. NRCS may hold a second sign-up period this spring if additional funds become available.

NRCS Can Help Farmers Restore Wetland Habitat

“Farmers and landowners interested in restoring or enhancing wetland habitat should immediately contact their local office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)", said Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, NRCS State Conservationist.

NRCS Maryland received $648,260 in financial assistance funds to assist Maryland’s farmers and landowners through the Farm Bill’s Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). "WRP is an important conservation program because it restores wetland habitat that was lost due to intensive farming and urbanization," added Murphy.

Farmers and landowners interested in filing an application for funding consideration or learning more about WRP should contact their county’s NRCS office or Soil Conservation District office located at the USDA Service Center before March 14, 2006. Applications will be ranked according to criteria that will determine which proposals offer the most environmental benefits at the lowest cost.

Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) Sign-up

Annapolis, MD (February 15, 2006) -- Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State Conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced that Maryland and the District of Columbia received additional funding of $155,906 from the 2002 Farm Bill to use to restore wildlife habitat through the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP). "NRCS Maryland received additional funds in recognition of the state's high level of interest in restoring wildlife habitat and its cooperative partnership effort of helping people help the land."

Murphy advises landowners interested in filing an application for funding consideration through WHIP to immediately contact their local NRCS or Soil Conservation District office located at USDA Service Centers. Applications will be ranked according to criteria that will determine which proposals offer the most wildlife habitat benefits. Sign-up for WHIP funds will end on February 24, 2006.

NRCS Announces Sign-up for 2006 Conservation Security Program in Maryland

Annapolis, MD (February 2, 2006) -- USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy announced that the sign-up period for the 2006 Conservation Security Program (CSP) will be held from February 13, 2006 to March 31, 2006.  The Choptank Watershed in Maryland and portions of Delaware's Nanticoke Watershed (which extends into Maryland) are the only watersheds eligible for CSP enrollment in Maryland this year. These watersheds include all of Caroline County and portions of Queen Anne's, Talbot, Dorchester, and Wicomico Counties.
