Blue Check When to Test

Emission inspections are required for many original vehicle registrations and for each annual renewal. Your mailed renewal notice will indicate whether a test is required. Emissions inspections stations in Nevada are privately owned and decentralized.

Blue Check Vehicles Requiring a Test

Passenger cars, trucks, RVs and motor homes need an emissions test if they are:

  • Based in the urban areas of Clark or Washoe county;
  • Gasoline powered (regardless of weight or size)
  • Diesel powered with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating up to and including 10,000 pounds; and
  • 1968 model year or newer
    (new vehicles on their first and second registration are exempted; a test is required upon a vehicle's third registration)

Emissions tests are valid for 90 days.
You must have a valid test to complete any original registration or renewal if the vehicle requires a test as listed above. This includes reinstatement of a suspended registration.

Nevada requires used car dealers to issue a valid emissions test, when required, on any vehicle they sell. In private transactions, the test is the buyer's responsibility.

Blue Check Exempt Vehicles

The following vehicles are exempt from emission testing:

  • New motor vehicles on their first and second registration;
  • New hybrid-electric vehicles for the first 5 model years;
  • 1967 or older;
  • Motorcycle or moped;
  • Vehicles based in remote areas of Clark and Washoe counties and all other Nevada counties (call us if you are not sure whether a check is required in your area);
  • Alternative fuel vehicles;
  • Diesel vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or greater;
  • Transfer of ownership/registration if the last test was conducted within 90 days before the transfer;
  • Transfer of ownership/registration between husband and wife;
  • Transfer of ownership/registration between companies whose principal business is leasing vehicles if there is no change in the lessee or operator of the vehicle;
  • Vehicles registered as a Classic Rod or Classic Vehicle and driven 2,500 miles or less per year.
  • Vehicles registered as a Replica Vehicle.

Blue Check Test Locations

You can take your vehicle to any Authorized Emission Inspection Station licensed by the State of Nevada. Authorized stations can be identified by the official sign issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Stations are also required to post signs listing test standards and maximum fees. There are only a limited number of stations which test light-duty diesel vehicles. Call the DMV Emissions Lab in your area for locations.

Blue Check Test Fees

A maximum fee is established by the Department based on an annual survey of shop labor rates. Each station is required to display the total fees charged and the station's hours of operation. See Emissions Fees.

Blue Check Types of Tests

Nevada uses On-Board Diagnostics (OBDII) Testing for 1996 and newer vehicles. The operator will connect an analyzer to the OBD computer in your vehicle. Data from your vehicle will indicate whether its emissions systems are operating properly and within emissions limits.

Older vehicles are tested with a Two-Speed Idle Test.  The operator will test your vehicle once at idle speed, then test it again with the engine running at approximately 2500 rpm.

Diesel vehicles are tested on a dynamometer.

Blue Check You Passed!

Once your vehicle has passed the emission inspection and you have received your Vehicle Inspection Report from the inspection station, you may renew your existing vehicle registration at participating stations, on the Internet, by telephone, by mail or in person at a DMV Full-Service or Express office. Inspection results on gasoline vehicles are transmitted to DMV electronically.

If you renew at the Emissions Inspection Station or by Internet or telephone, your registration is updated instantly.  The decal and registration slip are printed and placed in the mail within two business days. Emissions test results are submitted to the DMV electronically.

First-time Nevada registrations and license plates can be obtained only at Full-Service DMV offices.

Blue Dot  Test Failures and Waivers

Back To Top

Blue Check You Didn’t  Pass?

If your vehicle has failed the initial emission test, you must repair the vehicle and pass the after repairs emission test to be eligible for registration. Repairs can be made by any facility that the owner chooses. If you prefer, you may make the repairs yourself. (See Waiver Information for restrictions in your county) Vehicles which are unable to meet their emission standard will require a waiver issued by DMV prior to registration.

Fee discounts, "No Pass-No Pay" options and similar promotions are not mandated by State law and are offered at the discretion of the individual station.

Blue Check If you live in Washoe County

An application for a waiver must include receipts from a 2G Licensed Authorized Station showing that at least $200 has been spent on parts other than a catalytic converter, fuel inlet restrictor or air injection system, or on labor other than emission testing if the repairs evidenced by the receipt were directly related to the deficiency in emissions.

If the vehicle is repaired by the owner, the application must include receipts or other evidence that at least $200 has been spent on parts other than a catalytic converter, fuel inlet restrictor or air injection system purchased within 14 days after the initial emission test.

Blue Check If you live in Clark County

An application for a waiver must include receipts from a Licensed Authorized Station showing that at least $450 has been spent on parts other than a catalytic converter, fuel inlet restrictor or air injection system, or on labor other than emission testing if the repairs evidenced by the receipt were directly related to the deficiency in emissions.

If the vehicle is not repaired at an authorized station, it will not be eligible for a waiver, regardless of the cost incurred.

Waivers will not be issued to:

  • Smoking Vehicles - The vehicle must be repaired with no limit on cost.
  • Vehicles eligible for warranty coverage

Blue Check If you still fail - If you failed the initial test, did the repairs pursuant to your county's requirements, met the financial limit to obtain a waiver, and your vehicle still fails the re-inspection, bring your vehicle, both failed certificates, and receipts of all repair work to the Department of Motor Vehicles Emission Test Facility to request a waiver.

Blue Dot  Classic Vehicle Exemption

Forms Help | Back To Top

Vehicles registered with Classic Vehicle, Classic Rod or Old Timer license plates and driven 2,500 miles or less per year are exempt from emissions testing.

Print-Friendly Fact Sheet (PDF)

To renew the registration each year, you must complete the Restored Vehicle Odometer Certification for Emission Exemption (EC-18) to certify that you have driven the vehicle 2,500 miles or less.

Mail this with your annual renewal or you may renew in person. Your registration renewal notice will list "Smog Check Required" each year. You will not be able to use Internet or telephone renewals. If you drive the vehicle more than 2,500 miles in one year, you must obtain an emissions inspection.

To obtain the plates and exemption, the vehicle must meet the requirements listed on either the Classic Vehicle License Plate Application SP-34, or Classic Rod License Plate Application SP-20 or Old Timer License Plate Application SP-12. Download and complete the appropriate application. See Classic Vehicle License Plates

You must complete a Restored Vehicle Odometer Certification for Emission Exemption (EC-18) form and the vehicle must pass an initial emissions inspection.

You must bring the vehicle, the EC-18 form and the emissions Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) to a DMV Emissions Lab. See Contacts. The DMV lab technician will inspect the vehicle and sign the EC-18.

Bring the completed plate application, any existing license plates, the EC-18 and the VIR into the main DMV office. If you wish to keep the old plates, you must bring the rear plate and surrender the decal in person.

We will issue your new plates with a new registration slip and decal. No registration renewal is required and your expiration date will remain the same. Fees to purchase the plates are $36 and a $5 substitute plate fee will also apply.

You have the option of renewing your vehicle registration for a full year. Your expiration date will change if the current expiration date is more than 35 days away. Credit will be given for the unused portion of your current Nevada registration.

Be sure to obtain the original emissions Vehicle Inspection Report from the DMV technician. You must retain this as long as you wish to claim the emissions exemption.

Smog Check Results

Nevada Emissions Control Inspection Stations submit test results electronically. Pictured above is a test result as it appears in the DMV computer system.  This capability enables the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles to offer Nevada motorists the options to renew their registrations by Internet, by telephone and at emission inspection stations.

Testing machines use the Internet to provide real-time monitoring and results as the inspection is completed. Valid test results are forwarded to the vehicle's registration file in the DMV computer system.

Motorists receive a plain-paper Vehicle Inspection Report as their receipt. Even though results are sent electronically, you should keep this report and submit a copy of it with mailed and drop-box registration renewals.

The emissions database also helps the DMV's Compliance Enforcement Division spot problems and target fraud and improve our air quality. Benefits include:

  • Standardized reports on inspection stations and operators
  • Real time monitoring of inspections in progress
  • Identify and track gross polluters (the highest emitting vehicles)
  • Spot high failure rates and other trends by vehicle make and model
  • Improved accuracy of tests
