People often ask, What is the best book I can get to identify plants? This list includes over
100 references that I commonly use. Those marked with a star are most commonly used.

- TAMU - Image Gallery has
1000's of plants divided into five groups by the first letter of the Family name including Families A-B, Families C-G, Families H-L, Families M-O and Families P-Z. The indexed image link file string query
system only requires that a genus or species name be typed into the search blank and then be submitted.
- Native Plants of South Texas
This herbarium focuses on native plants from the northern portion of the South Texas Plains and the southern portion of the Hill Country. Collections were made from the area bounded by San Antonio on the east, Sonora on the west, Cotulla on the south and Junction on the north. Click on any of the categories below to access a list of common and scientific names, or use the color chart to find a flower. - Digital Library Project University of California, Berkeley - - - This site can access 20,361 images of plants. To look for photos, you can choose scientific or common names alphabetically.
- Weeds of Missouri
- This website is divided into a set of Field Crops and Pasture Weeds and a set of Ornamental and Turf Weeds. Some of the entrys have both seedling and mature plants and most have more than one photo.
- Weeds of lawns, yards, and flowerbeds in Mississippi

- USDA - Plants Database This seems slow to me but it does find things that no other site lists in any way. The PLANTS Database is a single source of standardized information about plants.
This database focuses on plants of the U.S. and its territories and includes:
names, checklists, automated tools, identification information, species
abstracts, distributional data, crop information, plant symbols, plant growth
data, plant materials information, plant links, references, and other plant
information. The database is searchable by common or scientific names.

BASIC INFORMATION for PLANT IDENTIFICATION
Much information is available from various Plant Taxonomy Classes.
These classes generally approach plant families systematically.
Basic characteristics of families are discussed but finding a species name requires going to a
KEY.
A description of each plant family is in the DELTA data base called -
The Families of Flowering Plants
Before trying to Key a plant to genus or species you first have to determine the correct family.
The Botany Department at Colby College has
the World Wide Flowering Plant Family Identification - Checklist. First go to
FAMILY ID and there
you are given a list of plant characteristics that you can check off.
Select the characters that are present in the specimen being identified.
Press Submit when ready to determine possible families.
Pressing "Back" at the top of the window brings you back to the page keeping your
character selections.
If you have a good sample and answer the list correctly, you will be given one or more
of the most likely
plant families after submitting your list. Even if you do not use this checklist to determine the Family,
the items on the list help you to look for the characteristics that you need to
