“MACRO- AND MICRO-NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT IN RELATION TO PEST CONTROL FOR ORGANIC SYSTEMS”
Sponsored by Reiter Affiliated Companies
Since the earliest days of organic farming, as early as the 1920’s, advocates have advised: “Feed the soil, not the plant!” Today, new research is continually reinforcing the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy, balanced soil conditions for optimal plant health. In turn, plant health and vitality is increasingly correlated with a plant’s ability to protect itself from disease and pests. Today’s workshop will take an in-depth look at how plant defense responses are related to soil nutrition. Essential variables including soil organic matter, fertility sources, nutrition rates, and balancing micro- and macro-nutrients will be related to case studies in pest protection by some of the West Coast’s leading experts on the subject. Transition issues will be considered for conventional growers who are seeking to incorporate organic methods into their management system.
