USGS/EPA Workshop on Transport and Remediation of Chlorinated Solvents in Fractured Sedimentary Rocks

A USGS scientist is giving an outdoor presentation to field trip attendees.
The USGS also hosted a one-day Geological Society of America (GSA) field trip "Geologic, Hydrogeologic, and Biogeochemical Controls on Natural and Enhanced Degradation of Industrial Solvents in Fractured Rocks" to the USGS Toxic Substances Hydrology Program's Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) Research Site, West Trenton, New Jersey, on October 26, 2006.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Technology Innovation Program are hosting the USGS/EPA Workshop on Transport and Remediation of Chlorinated Solvents in Fractured Sedimentary Rocks at the USGS's New Jersey Water Science Center, West Trenton, New Jersey, on September 25, 2008. This one day workshop will present results of multidisciplinary investigations conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), Geosyntec Consultants, and ECOR Solutions) on trichloroethene (TCE) distribution, transport, and biodegradation in fractured mudstones underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) to EPA scientists and other invitees. USGS scientists and their partners will present information on:

  • Finding flow and transport paths using hydraulic and tracer testing, geologic and geophysical characterization, and flow modeling.
  • Monitoring contaminants, geochemistry, and microbiology using sampling from packer-isolated intervals of boreholes, in-situ downhole samplers, and methane extraction to quantify contaminant concentrations in the rock matrix.
  • Evaluating remediation effectiveness by identifying processes controlling contaminant mass removal by pump and treat, monitored natural attenuation, and bioaugmentation; and by estimating mass removal rates using empirical calculations and numerical modeling.

Due to logistical limitations, attendance is by invitation only.
