The Office of Wildland Fire Coordination (OWFC) is located in the Office of
the Secretary, Department of the Interior, Washington D.C. The Office is headed
by a director who reports to the Assistant Secretary – Policy, Management, and
Budget through the Deputy Assistant Secretary – Business Management and Wildland
Fire. The Director carries out the functions and responsibilities of the office
with assistance from support, program, and policy staff.
OWFC is responsible for the coordination, integration, and oversight of
Wildland Fire Management programs within the Department of the Interior (Bureau
of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and
National Park Service). The OWFC staff coordinates wildland fire management with
other Federal agencies, particularly the USDA Forest Service, state foresters,
tribes, state and local governments, and a variety of stakeholder groups
including volunteer firefighters, industry, and non-governmental organizations.
The office was established by the Secretary of the Interior in January 2001. The
office provides staff support to the Wildland Fire Leadership Council. The
Director coordinates with the National Fire and Aviation Executive Board (NFAEB).
