Mission: The mission of the Formosan Subterranean Termite Research Unit is to identify existing termite control technologies, validate and integrate theminto subterranean termite (particularly Formosan subterranean termite)management systems through large-area pilot tests and replicated, site specific tests in cooperation with other federal agencies, state, public, and private organizations. Integration of present effective technologies into a rational system for managing FST populations and damage will provide immediate relief through reduction in termite populations. Current baiting technologies and selection and application of soil toxicants will be improved through extensive replicated, site-specific experimentation. Fundamental research to find predators or pathogens of the termite and development of known entomopathogenic fungi will focus on biological control of the termite. Measures to reduce populations of the termite through disruption of its biological cycle will be developed. New natural product toxins and new and improved technology for evolving efficacious, sustainable, and environmentally-sound management/colony elimination practices will be developed.

Mission: The mission of the Formosan Subterranean Termite (FST) Program is to coordinate the planning, organization, and implementation of area wide suppression projects for the Formosan subterranean termite. Provide leadership to Federal, State, and local researchers in team efforts to develop new technology and implement area wide suppression programs using current and newly developed technology for the control of FST. Plan and coordinate program reviews with recommendations to Center, Area, and National Program Staff leadership. Provide leadership to and cooperate with Universities and Federal, State, and local Agencies to transfer technology and disseminate information and knowledge about FST control to the pest control industry and property owners.
