Task 3: Develop a regional model
Task Chief: Richard Whitman
Collaborators: State and Federal Agencies with records of historic data
Period of Project: March 2008 - present
Information will be gathered to develop a list of areas that would be good candidate locations for Regional Modeling.
Overall Objective
Develop regionalized nowcast models for selected coastlines.
Overall Activities
Review active beach monitoring programs in the Great Lakes as reported by federal agencies and evaluate their potential for regionalized modeling based upon:
- intensity of indicator bacteria
- within swimming season
- over long periods
- extensive geographic monitoring of indicator bacteria
- consistency of monitoring and continuity of management program
- supporting hydrometeorology
- willingness to partner and share date
- desire to participate long term at a regionalized level
- desire to interact at a inter-jurisdictional level
-
Deploying offshore ADCP at Ogden Dunes.
data consistent with modeling targets
- QA/QC
- Range and variation
- Consistency of sources among beaches (non-point/point source)
2008 Objective
Information will be gathered in the intensity of monitoring of Great Lake Beaches with the intentions of developing a list of areas that would be good candidate locations for Regional Modeling.
2008 Activities
Identify Candidate beaches and variables for regional modeling
Pilot Projects
- Work on Indiana-area beaches will be completed
- Manuscript describing an empirical model for predicting E. coli along the Indiana coast of Lake Michigan will be completed
- Development of regional approach to Chicago beaches
- Manuscript will be developed that identifies characteristics of E. coli fluctuations among beaches
- Begin developing regional approach for Door County, Wisconsin beaches
- Historical monitoring data and hydrometeorological data will be collected and analyzed for modeling applications
