System of Systems Tools
- Atmospheric Modeling Models - The Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) was established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to collaborate with EPA's National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) in developing advanced air quality models that can simulate the transport and fate of pollutants in the atmosphere.
- Models-3 Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) - A major modeling system to improve 1) the environmental management community's ability to evaluate the impact of air quality management practices for multiple pollutants at multiple scales and 2) the scientist's ability to better probe, understand, and simulate chemical and physical interactions in the atmosphere. [Metadata]
- Mercury Modeling - AMD personnel continued participation in the first phase of an intercomparison study of numerical models for long-range atmospheric transport of mercury sponsored by the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) and organized by EMEP's Meteorological Synthesizing Center - East in Moscow, Russia. This first phase of the intercomparison involves the simulation of mercury chemistry in a closed cloud volume given a variety of initial conditions.
- Biogenic Emissions Inventory System (BEIS) - BEIS estimates volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from vegetation and nitric oxide (NO) emissions from soils. [Metadata]
- Regulatory Environmental Modeling - Database containing an inventory of EPA's environmental models. [Metadata]
- Support Center for Regulatory Air Models (SCRAM) - This is a source of information on atmospheric dispersion (air quality) models that support regulatory programs required by the Clean Air Act.
- Radiation National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (Rad NESHAPs) - Information on radioactive hazardous air pollutants and EPA's regulations that control their emissions; provides links to assessment and compliance models for technical users.
- Exposure Model for Soil-Organic Fate and Transport (EMSOFT) - The EMSOFT manual describes a computer screening model that may be used 1) to determine concentrations of contaminants remaining in the soil over a given time (when the initial soil concentration is known); 2) to quantify the mass flux (rate of transfer) of contaminants into the atmosphere over time; and 3) to subsequently calculate contaminant air concentrations by inputting mass flux values into atmospheric dispersion models.
- Fate, Exposure, & Risk Analysis (FERA) - The tools found on this website, which include EPA's Total Risk Integrated Methodology, will assist efforts to evaluate the health risks and environmental effects associated with exposure to "criteria" (six common air pollutants including ozone and particles) and toxic air pollutants.
- Receptor Models - The models offered at this web site make use of ambient observations and emissions source profiles to apportion sources or source categories of fine particles.
- MOBILE6 Vehicle Emission Modeling Software - This web site provides the MOBILE6 Vehicle Emission Modeling Software and related presentations and training resources. MOBILE6 is an emission factor model for predicting gram per mile emissions of Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) , Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Particulate Matter (PM), and toxics from cars, trucks, and motorcycles under various conditions. [Metadata]
- Fuels Models - This web site provides information on several models for estimating the emissions impacts due to changes in fuel properties and composition.
- Nonroad Engines, Equipment, and Vehicles (NONROAD) - This is a model for estimating air pollution emissions from nonroad engines, equipment, and vehicles. Its primary use is for the development of air pollution inventories by professional mobile source modelers, such as state air quality officials and consultants. [Metadata]
- Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) - Multi-scale Motor Vehicle & Equipment Emission System is a new system for estimating emissions for on-road and nonroad sources, covering a broad range of pollutants and allowing multiple scale analysis, from fine-scale analysis to national inventory estimation. When fully implemented, MOVES will serve as the replacement for MOBILE6 and NONROAD.

- Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) - Allows emissions data processing methods to integrate high-performance-computing (HPC) sparse-matrix algorithms. The SMOKE system has greatly enhanced support for decision making about emissions controls for both urban and regional applications, has provided a mechanism for preparing specialized inputs for air quality modeling research, and has made air quality forecasting possible. NOTE: EPA uses this model, but does not significantly contribute to its development or maintenance.
- Pennsylvania State University / National Center for Atmospheric Research Numerical Model (PSU/NCAR MM5) - The PSU/NCAR mesoscale model (known as MM5) is a limited-area, nonhydrostatic, terrain-following sigma-coordinate model designed to simulate or predict mesoscale atmospheric circulation.
- Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) - HYSPLIT4 is the newest version of a complete system for computing simple air parcel trajectories to complex dispersion and deposition simulations.
