Research Category: Health Effects , Children's Health
Description:
Objective:The overall objective of this research project is to focus on pesticide and allergen exposures of young children living in agricultural communities in California. The specific objectives are to: (1) assess pesticide exposure in pregnant women and young children; (2) assess the potential health effects of pesticides on childhood growth, neurodevelopment and respiratory disease; (3) determine the mechanisms of pesticide neuro- and immunotoxicity; and (4) develop community-based outreach and interventions to reduce take-home pesticide exposure to children of farm workers.
Progress Summary:The core research has been a longitudinal birth cohort study, the Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS) project. This study enrolled primarily low-income Mexican immigrant farm worker women living in the Salinas Valley, California, during pregnancy and follows those children until they reach 7 years of age. Mothers were interviewed twice during pregnancy and once at delivery, also once when the child was 6 months and 1, 2, and 3.5 years of age. Urine samples were collected and neurodevelopmental assessments of the children were conducted at each visit since birth. Additionally, home inspections were conducted and blood samples have been collected at several visit points. Currently, we are conducting visits with the children at 5 years of age. We have conducted several other sub-studies including pesticide exposure studies in children and pregnant women, intervention studies to reduce pesticide exposure, and laboratory-based mechanism studies. We also have developed extensive community outreach and translation activities.
Future Activities:The investigators did not report any future activities.
