The National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program's Cook
Inlet Basin study unit is an integrated water-quality assess-
ment designed to address a broad array of water-quality proper-
ties at various spatial and temporal scales. These properties
are then related to natural and human factors that can influence
the quality of water. During the second year of this study, a
distribution and occurrence survey of 15 sites in the Cook
Inlet Basin was done. The Swanson River, located on the Kenai
Peninsula in the southeast portion of the Cook Inlet Basin was
one of the 15 sites.
The purpose of this data set is to give the Cook Inlet NAWQA study unit the information needed to do basic spatial analysis for a given watershed within the Cook Inlet Basin. The Swanson River basin as well as other drainage basins within the Cook Inlet Basin were digitized into a Geographic Information System (GIS) and used in overlay operations with other geographic data layers such as land cover, geology, and ecoregions in order to provide basin characteristics.
Once digitized, the arcs were projected into an Albers Equal Area projection with the following parameters:
Projection ALBERS Units METERS Spheroid CLARKE1866 Datum NAD27 Parameters: 1st standard parallel 55 00 00 2nd standard parallel 65 00 00 central meridian -154 00 00 latitude of projection's origin 50 00 00 false easting (meters) 0.0000 false northing (meters) 0.0000
Arcs were then appended and overshoots & undershoots were corrected. Polygon topology was then created and labels added.
