Monday, September 28, 1998 -- The U.S. Department of
Transportations Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS)
today released its second issue of the Journal on
Transportation and Statistics. This issue focuses on the
January 1994 Northridge, Calif., earthquake.
"We can learn from catastrophes,
especially how to respond to disasters more effectively and how
well infrastructure and physical support systems work
together," said BTS Deputy Director Robert Knisely.
"This earthquake and its aftermath provided important
information about the impact of transportation disruptions on
businesses and regional economies."
This issue of the journal presents the
results of BTS-sponsored research in cooperation with
California-area universities. The University of California at Los
Angeles, the University of California, Irvine, the University of
Southern California and California Polytechnic University,
Pomona, initiated studies of travel behavior and economic
relationships revealed by responses to the earthquake.
The journal articles and contributing
authors include:

Earthquake on Transit and Highway Use," by Genevieve
Giuliano, Ph.D., University of Southern California; and
Jacqueline Golob, Ph.D., Jacqueline Golob Associates, Los
Angeles.

University of Southern California, School of Urban
Planning and Development; Harry W. Richardson, Ph.D.,
