BTS Releases Second Issue of the Journal of Transportation and Statistics
Monday, September 28, 1998 -- The U.S. Department of Transportations Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released its second issue of the Journal on Transportation and Statistics. This issue focuses on the January 1994 Northridge, Calif., earthquake. "We can learn from catastrophes, especially how to respond to disasters more effectively and how well infrastructure and physical support systems work together," said BTS Deputy Director Robert Knisely. "This earthquake and its aftermath provided important information about the impact of transportation disruptions on businesses and regional economies." This issue of the journal presents the results of BTS-sponsored research in cooperation with California-area universities. The University of California at Los Angeles, the University of California, Irvine, the University of Southern California and California Polytechnic University, Pomona, initiated studies of travel behavior and economic relationships revealed by responses to the earthquake. The journal will be published twice a year initially, with the possibility of a quarterly edition in the future. The first years subscription is free of charge and readers from government, academia and industry are encouraged to subscribe. The editor-in-chief and a 26-member editorial board were selected largely from outside the federal government, although the U.S. Transportation Department is well represented.
