Electronic Waste: Reuse, Donation, and Recycling Organizations

September 2008

To promote computer reuse and recycling, and discourage discarding equipment in the trash, EPA offers New England residents a list of reuse, donation and recycle organizations.  These organizations can help find new users for your old equipment.  If you cannot find someone to use your computer, a recycler may take it apart and salvage and/or recycle the valuable materials.  Contact these organizations to see what they accept, any associated fees, and how transportation is arranged.

In compiling this list, we cannot include all the local organizations that accept computers for reuse or recycling. We encourage you to use the list as a starting point and check other options, such as local universities and colleges, vocational schools, charities, libraries and religious organizations.  Your local recycling coordinator might also offer information on other programs.  Finally, listing your computer equipment on a Materials/Waste Exchange (listed by state, see below) may help identify other businesses or organizations that can use it.

If you have questions about donating or recycling a computer, or if you have suggestions for additions or corrections to this list, please contact:

Plug-In to eCycling
A voluntary partnership between EPA and consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers to offer consumers more opportunities to donate or recycle - to "eCycle" - their used electronics.

Do the PC thing: Donate
Donating computers to those who need them benefits communities, helps us use valuable materials wisely, and keeps working computers out of the trash.
