SPECIALTIES:

Geologic mapping: stratigraphy, sedimentology, sedimentary petrology, and structure of Tertiary sedimentary rocks, Oregon and Washington Coast Ranges and Olympic Mountains; paleogeography.

Energy resource and geologic hazards evaluation.

Traditional field work and petrography enhanced by geochemistry and paleomagnetics of Tertiary volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Coast Range (Oregon and Washington)

CURRENT WORK:

Alan's current work includes
  • Geologic mapping in Pacific Northwest Urban Corridor; northern Oregon Coast Range.
  • Natural energy resource study of the Mist Gas Field, NW Oregon.
  • Geologic mapping and stratigraphic study of SW Washington forearc (with OSU graduate students and Russ Evarts).
  • Mapping Gales Creek fault zone continuation into NW Oregon Coast Range with Ray Wells.
  • Geologic mapping of Columbia River Basalt aquifers, NW Oregon, using classical field work augmented with geochemistry, aeromagnetic, and paleomagnetic methods (with Ray Wells, Marv Beeson, Terry Tolan, Jon Hagstrum, and Rick Blakely).
  • Stratigraphic and sedimentary petrology study of turbidites and other rock units (e.g., Point of Arches) of the northern Olympic Mountains, Cape Flattery-Clallam Bay area (with Parke Snavely, Jr.).
