The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) was developed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) to measure trends in students' mathematics and science achievement. Offered in 1995, 1999, and 2003, TIMSS provides participating countries with an unprecedented opportunity to measure students' progress in mathematics and science achievement on a regular 4-year cycle. Through participation in TIMSS, the United States has gained reliable and timely data on the mathematics and science achievement of our students compared to that of students in other countries. The next cycle of TIMSS is scheduled for 2007.
