please email sunwise@epa.gov.
The Program historically has had two levels:
1) The Shining Star Award
This designation recognizes partner schools and their educators who
are enthusiastically implementing SunWise in a variety of different ways.
Shining Star Schools and Educators have shown a lasting commitment to
sun safety education, either adapting the program in new and effective
ways, discovering unique ways to share the SunWise message in the community,
or implementing the program in multiple classrooms or grade levels.
2) The Helios Leadership Award
The SunWise Helios Leadership Award is given to SunWise partner schools
that meet all of the eligibility criteria for the Shining Star Award
and that have shown outstanding leadership in school-based sun safety
education either by:
- Instituting a policy to address sun safety that can serve as a model
to other schools/districts; or
- Erecting a shade structure; or
- Addressing the issue of sun safety in a way that sets them apart
from the Shining Star Schools.
The Helios Leadership Award recognizes the SunWise partner school, the
participating school administrator, and participating educator(s) who
are most directly involved with achieving the program's success.
Application Process:
SunWise partner schools that meet the eligibility criteria should submit
a description (200 words or less) of how you implemented the program,
along with attachments that document your eligibility for the award,
such as lesson plans, student samples, photos, or news clips about your
