5 quick checks for LRP eligibility
|
| Here are the basic eligibility requirements for NIH loan repayment programs:

Doctoral Degree
Applicants must have a M.D., Ph.D., Psy.D., Pharm. D., D.O., D.D.S.,
D.M.D., D.P.M., D.C., N.D., or equivalent doctoral degree from an
accredited institution. D.V.M. is appropriate for all LRPs except the
Clinical Research LRP or Clinical Research for Individuals from
Disadvantaged Backgrounds LRP.
Government or Nonprofit Research Funding

An applicant's research must be funded by a domestic nonprofit
or U.S. Government (Federal, state or local) entity. A domestic
foundation, professional association, or institution is considered
to be non-profit if exempt from Federal tax under the provisions
of Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code (26 U.S.C. 501);

An NIH grant is acceptable but is not required;

Salary support and/or research funding from your university department is acceptable if your employer is nonprofit;

The research must be in a qualifying area and you must commit 50% or more of your total level of effort for an average of at least 20 hours per week during each quarterly service period for two years to the research (that is a minimum of 240 hours based on a 12-week quarter, or a minimum of 260 hours based on a 13-week quarter);

Finally, the research must not be prohibited by Federal law or NIH policy.
Educational Debt
Your educational debt - from qualifying types of student loans -
must equal at least 20 percent of your "institutional base salary". Institutional base salary is that paid by the institution where
you are conducting research.
Citizenship
You must document that you are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national,
or permanent resident.
Non-Federal Employment
NIH LRPs are not available to full-time Federal government
employees. However, if you are a part-time Federal employee
(working 20 hours/week or less) and you are not compensated
as a Federal employee for your research, and you are engaged
in the qualifying research for at least 20 hours per week,
you may be eligible for LRP payments. Separate LRPs are
available to NIH employee-researchers.
NOTE: Individuals who apply to the Clinical Research LRP
for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds must, in
addition to the requirements listed here, document their
disadvantaged status.
