The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama consists of approximately 100 positions. Positions include Assistant United States Attorneys, law students, college and/or high school students, and a variety of professional and support staff positions. Most employees are located in the main office in Birmingham, however, there is a small branch office located in Huntsville.

Attorneys

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama accepts resumes for attorney positions as posted by specific job vacancy announcements. Candidates interested in applying for attorney vacancies must have a J.D. degree; should have a minimum of one to three years litigative experience and possess excellent academic credentials. Trial experience is a plus. Salary is commensurate with experience. Attorney vacancies are posted on the following website: www.usdoj.gov/oarm/attvacancies.html. Attorneys who are interested in employment in other districts or at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., should visit the same website or call (202)514-3396 (24-hour recorded information).

Law Students

Student Volunteers: Law students are provided unpaid training opportunities. The positions allow students to gain experience in researching issues; writing memoranda of findings, briefs and motions and observing federal court proceedings. Students may choose to be placed in the civil, criminal or appellate division in the main office or in the Huntsville Branch Office.

Support Staff Positions

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama accepts applications for employment in non-attorney positions as posted by specific job vacancy announcements. The most common non-attorney positions are Legal Assistants and Paralegals. Other administrative and technical positions occasionally become available. Support staff vacancy announcements will be posted at the following website: www.usajobs.opm.gov. Qualification requirements vary for support positions and will be specified in each vacancy announcement.

Student Program

Student Temporary Employment Program: This program offers temporary clerical and administrative opportunities to high school students and/or students who are enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college or university, graduate or professional school, vocational, or technical school. During the school year, students may work between 16-20 hours per week; however, during school breaks, students may work up to 40 hours per week. Vacancy announcements for the Student Temporary Employment Program will be mailed to local high schools, colleges and universities.

College Work Student Program: Students interested in this program must contact their college or university to determine if they qualify for a college work study position.

Important Information

Because of the sensitive nature of many matters handled by the United States Attorney's Office, all employment offers are contingent upon the completion and satisfactory adjudication of a background investigation by the Department of Justice. This is a thorough investigation that includes checks with present and former employers, military records, and credit bureaus. The investigation also includes verification of tax filings and attendance at institutions of higher learning. Selected applicants are subject to drug testing by urinalysis prior to appointment.

Except where otherwise provided by law, there is no discrimination because of color, race, religion, national origin, politics, marital status, disability, age, sex, sexual orientation, membership or non-membership in an employee organization, or on the basis of personal favoritism.
