What is an ITS Deployment Statistics Database entry?
The ITS Deployment Statistics Database compiles responses to survey questions
about how much ITS technology has been deployed throughout the country. Two types
of surveys are administered: metropolitan and statewide.
For example, in the metropolitan survey, transportation professionals at the state and
local government level in 108 of the largest metropolitan areas who manage traffic signals
are asked how many traffic signals they have and, of those, how many operate under closed-loop
control. Survey results are generally displayed as a percentage, in this case the number of
signals under closed loop control divided by the total number of signals. The ITS Deployment
Statistics Database displays the results for each individual agency surveyed, as well as a
summary of all agency results for each metropolitan area and a national summary.
(The national average in 2006 was 54%)
Alternatively, statewide survey respondents are asked if they have any pedestrian safety
systems that alert drivers when pedestrians enter crosswalks. A single pedestrian safety
system deployed throughout the entire state would prompt a "yes" answer. Results for the
statewide surveys are generally displayed as the number of states adopting a particular
technology. (In 2006, 14 states answered "yes" to the question about pedestrian safety systems.)

What are the sources for ITS Deployment Statistics Database Entries?
The data contained in this website are derived from national ITS Deployment Tracking
surveys conducted in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Surveys were distributed to agencies in the country's 108
largest metropolitan areas in 2004 and 2006 and to a more limited list of the country's 78
largest metropolitan areas in 2005. The data gathered in the survey include information on the
characteristics and extent of deployment of various ITS technologies. In addition to
deployment data, the surveys gather information on interagency integration. Table 1
shows the surveys issued in 2006 and the response received.

How is the ITS Deployment Statistics Database organized?
Results from 2004, 2005 and 2006 surveys are available through this website. Results from
surveys conducted in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002 are available through separate websites
that can be accessed from this site.
A few questions have been asked consistently in surveys beginning in the late 1990s among the
country's 78 largest metropolitan areas, enabling the tracking of national trends over a long
period of time. Results of these selected survey questions can be viewed by selecting the
National Trends option from the left menu.
Survey results are grouped according to the category of respondents who provided the
information. Information about ITS deployment on each of the 108 largest
metropolitan areas is grouped into the following categories:
arterial management, freeway management, transit management, public safety (both law enforcement
and fire/rescue), electronic toll collection, and metropolitan planning organizations.
Information about statewide ITS deployments is grouped into the
following categories: crash prevention & safety, operations & maintenance, surface transportation
weather, traffic management and traveler information.

What is the process for updating the ITS Deployment Statistics Database?
The process for determining what questions to ask for each year's survey involves balancing
the desire to obtain a comprehensive picture of ITS deployment in the U.S. with the need to
minimize the burden on survey respondents. A core set of questions is repeated in each survey
to enable the tracking of deployment trends over time. Additional questions, beyond the core
set, are added to cover new ITS technologies and to find out different information about familiar
ones. These addtional questions are not necessarily repeated in subsequent surveys.

How are agencies selected for inclusion in the survey?
The boundary used for each metropolitan area is the metropolitan planning area boundary,
defined by the local metropolitan planning organization. Agencies within the boundary associated
with urban areas with population greater than 50,000 are included in the survey. Agencies meeting
these criteria involved with freeway, arterial, and transit management, public safety and toll
collection are surveyed.

What is the survey response rate?
The survey response rate is typically 90% or higher. This high response rate is achieved by
working closely with survey respondents to answer questions. In addition, staff from U.S. DOT
headquarters and field offices work with survey respondents to assist the project team in
achieving the highest possible response rate.

What ITS technologies does the ITS Deployment Statistics Database not cover?
The ITS Deployment Statistics Database includes survey results from the full range of
intelligent infrastructure technologies except commercial vehicle operations and intermodal
freight management. In addition, the ITS Deployment Tracking effort does not measure the extent
of deployment of intelligent devices in private vehicles, such as OnStar.

How often is the ITS Deployment Statistics Database updated?
The ITS Deployment Tracking survey is conducted on either an annual or semi-annual basis,
depending on available resources. (Recent surveys have been conducted on an annual basis.)
The survey usually takes place during the summer, with the results posted online the following
spring.

How can I learn more about the ITS Deployment Statistics Database?
Training sessions on how to use the ITS Deployment Statistics Database and other ITS
Joint Program Office-supported Knowledge Resources are presented at various venues and
formats throughout the year. An archived presentation of one such training session from
the T3 (Talking Technology and Transportation) series, sponsored by the ITS Joint Program
Office, is available online.
