TRENTON, Mich., Sept. 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Black Lagoon on the Detroit River in Trenton, Mich., will be the first contaminated sediment site to be cleaned up under the Great Lakes Legacy Act.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt announced the joint project with Larry Arreguin of Governor Jennifer Granholm's Southeast Michigan office.
Site preparation begins this week and the dredging will begin in mid- October. The project will be completed using $4.2 million in Legacy Act funds and $2.3 million from the Clean Michigan Initiative.

U.S. Congressman John Dingell, the Trust for Public Land,and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today the sale of Humbug Marsh, 410 acres of marsh and upland located along the Detroit River. This will be owned and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

Birth of chicks another milestone in former industrial site's environmental revitalization_______
WYANDOTTE, Mich., June 14, 2004 -- BASF's Fighting Island, a three-square-mile ecological habitat in the Detroit River, has undergone several projects over the past several years, including tree reforestation, wetland restoration, and vegetation planting. Now, the island is home for two adult bald eagles and their two recently hatched chicks.
