The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge also manages a large network of waterfowl production areas. These are designated lands set aside for the production of waterfowl. These areas provide an excellent example of prairie grassland habitat and wetland restoration efforts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its many partners. The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge manages over 2,700 acres of land in its thirteen county Wetland Management District as waterfowl production areas (WPAs). WPAs are open to the public. Hunting and birdwatching are the favored activities at these sites. Only foot travel is allowed on WPAs.
