We welcome you, our valued customers to National Symbols Cache Catalog! 

Our catalog includes three categories:  

(1) Smokey Bear,  wildland/urban interface materials, and education materials for fire prevention activities
(2) Woodsy Owl products for use in conservation education
(3) Fire Education items focusing on fire ecology, fire behavior, fire safety and more

All materials in this catalog are provided to help you, our interagency partners meet your educational goals and agency needs in fire prevention, fire education, and conservation education.

Who Can Order  

 

The National Symbols Cache  

  • The National Symbols Cache is co-located with the Northeast Interagency Fire Cache, 402 SE 11th Street, Grand Rapids, Minnesota 55744 We can be reached by phone at 218-327-4282 or by fax at 218-327-4604.
  • The National Symbols Cache has one full-time, one part-time and several rotating employees to provide you with quality customer service.

 

Catalog Organization 

  • The navigation bar located on the left side of catalog pages includes the following choices where you access all chapters within the catalog.  A Welcome choice takes the customer to the welcome page of the National Symbols Catalog. An How to Orderchoice delivers the customer to the section devoted to billing, ordering, and other information.  The National Symbol choices provide a direct link to welcome page for that chapter.  A Target Audience choice presents the customer a sort of each chapter's items by their target audiences (i.e., teachers; Spanish; etc.). Last, a Product List choice presents the customer an alphabetical list of all items within each chapter.
  • The photographs found throughout this web catalog are courtesy of various partners of the USDA-Forest Service National Symbols Programs and fire education.  We will be changing these pictures periodically. Highlight your local activities and gain recognition for your program by sending us your scanned pictures or loaning photographs to us.  Send them to: National Symbols Cache-Web Site Pictures, 402 11th Street SE, Grand Rapids, MN 55744.  We will return all photographs within two weeks.

Product Description Pages 

Each product has an individual product description page that includes a description of the item, size, use, standard pack, colors available (if applicable), price, and a picture. Also noted is whether the item is new, on sale, out of stock, or on clearance. At the bottom of each product description page, the customer is given the choice of the following. 

  •  "Add to Shopping List"- adds item to your shopping list
  •  "Review Shopping List"- allows customer to review which items they've chosen and how much money they've spent.  This "Review" page allows the customer to delete an item or change the quantity purchased.
  • "Update" - updates your order
  • "Trash Can" - to drop an item from the order form 
  • "Quantity" - choose the quantity the customer wants for each item
  • "Generate Order Form" - brings up the customer's order form for printing

Order Form Specifies 

  • Each of the catalog's three categories (i.e., Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl, and Fire Education) requires a separate order form.
  • The federal tax ID number requires 9 digits. Not required if paying with a credit card. Simply enter nine zero's if paying with a credit card.

Access Code 

  • Image protection is legally mandated and essential to maintain the integrity of the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl icons.  These symbols are protected by law under 16 U. S. C. 580 p - 4 and 18 U. S. C. 711a.  The access code is one measure the USDA Forest Service National Symbols Program takes to protect these icons from inappropriate use.
  • The National Symbols Cache is designed to be a wholesale operation to our approved agency and partner customers. Our materials cannot be resold and must be used for educational purposes.  Our materials are to be distributed free to the public. Access codes allow us to provide better customer service to you, while legally and appropriately managing the Symbols program.
  • Access codes are available from your USDA Forest Service RFFP and CE Coordinators. 
  • Please be discerning in the use of your access code.  If necessary (upon knowledge of improper customer access or inappropriate image use), the National Symbols Team may inactivate an access code. The access code is not required to order the Fire Education chapter items.

Out of Stock Items 

  • Out of stock items are noted on each product description page along with projected availability dates.  Out of stock items will be placed on backorder and shipped once available.

Printable Catalog 

 

Sale/Clearance Items 

  • Clearance items are noted on each product description page.
  • Sale items will have a temporary price reduction. Sale prices are only effective while they appear on the web page.

Other Resources  

  • Additional Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl promotional items intended for free distribution are available through separate National Association of State Foresters catalogs.
  • The USDA Forest Service contracts the management of licensed Smokey Bear and Woodsy products with The Metis Group. These products are available for purchase and resale. 

 

Customer Tips 

  • Customer tips are designed to further inform the customer about an item, to provide helpful information, and to highlight other resources for fire prevention, fire education and conservation activities. 

 

Product Selection/Price 

  • The Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl products were selected by an interagency committee representing a wide variety of our customers.  Items were selected based on several criteria including cost, target audience, educational merit, usefulness, etc. 
  • Prices and product selection are not guaranteed for any given time frame. Product selection and price will only be valid for the time they are shown on this web site.

Ordering

  • Order forms can be faxed or mailed to the National Symbols Cache at 218-327-4604.

Billing/Payment Methods

  • We are now able to process your order with the convenience of using a credit card. The Symbols Cache accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • All other orders are billed weekly. Delinquent payment of bills will disqualify you as a future customer of the National Symbols Catalog.  Unpaid bills will be forwarded to Washington, D.C. for legal action.

USDA-Forest Service Purchasing Authority

  • Campaign Material. FSM 6511.11g - Promoting Forest Service Programs. Absent specific statutory authority, agency appropriated funds are not available to pay for promoting programs, such as advertising and marketing. However, the Forest Service has the specific authority to promote the Smokey Bear program (18 U.S.C. 711, FSH 5109.18, Chapter 20), the Woodsy Owl program (31 U.S.C. 488a, 488b-3--488b-6), and the Take Pride in America program (36 U.S.C. 169i--1). These programs have the authority to develop an advertising campaign to create a demand for a service which goes beyond the regular function of disseminating information about Forest Service programs to the public. This also applies to using items of nominal value ($25) such as coffee mugs, t-shirts, ice scrapers, bumper stickers, buttons, pens, pencils, key rings, and other materials to promote Forest Service programs either within or outside the agency. Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Program material may be purchased through the Symbols Center of Excellence Cache, Grand Rapids, MN. Purchases are also authorized from an authorized licensed vendor. For further guidance, see Comp. Gen. B-223608, dated December 19, 1988, FSM 6511.13e, FAR 31.205-1(f)(6) – Public Relations and Advertising Costs. Shipping Information 

  • Orders are usually filled within 30 working days of receipt.
  • Most orders are shipped via UPS. Large orders are shipped commercial truck freight.

  • Shipping charges are now included in the price of the product. Requests for overnight, second day air, etc will be charged actual shipping charges.
