NAEP Activities

Preparations are underway for the 2009 NAEP assessments, while the results of the 2008 assessments are being prepared for release. Reports on assessments and studies conducted in 2007, 2006, and earlier are listed below. See a schedule of recent and future assessments as well as a chronology of NAEP assessments. Use the links below to learn about the upcoming and recent NAEP assessments.

NAEP 2009

The NAEP 2009 assessment will be given in mathematics, reading, and science in grades 4, 8, and 12 from January 26 to March 6, 2009. More than 7,000 NAEP staff will administer the assessment to over 1,000,000 students in more than 19,000 public and private schools in each state and the nation. Also, several states have volunteered to participate in the first-ever NAEP state assessment at grade 12 in mathematics and reading.

NAEP is required to conduct state assessments in mathematics and reading in grades 4 and 8 in public schools; these results will be reported in the fall of 2009 in The Nation’s Report Card. Results from the science assessment and from grade 12 mathematics and reading will be reported later.

A subset of high schools will be selected to participate in the High School Transcript Study. In schools selected for this study, transcripts will be collected in spring and summer 2009, after the administration of NAEP. In addition, various special studies may occur in a few schools.

NAEP 2008

Beginning in October 2007 and continuing through May 2008, NAEP administered the long-term trend assessment in reading and mathematics. The 2008 assessment continues trend measurements begun in the early 1970s to measure progress across time. The age sample for the long-term trend assessment is 9-, 13-, and 17-year olds. The assessment period for each age group was as follows:

  • Age 13: October 8, 2007–December 14, 2007
  • Age 9: January 7, 2008–March 14, 2008
  • Age 17: March 17, 2008–May 23, 2008

In addition, from January 28 through March 7, 2008, NAEP conducted a national assessment of the arts,  specifically in the areas of music and visual arts, at grade 8. Concurrently, national field tests in mathematics, reading, and science at grades 4, 8, and 12 were also administered in preparation for the operational assessments in these subjects in 2009. A small number of students in some schools were administered interactive computer and hands-on science tasks.

A special computer-based pilot study of science tasks was conducted in a small number of schools in the fall of 2007. Subsamples of students will begin to be assessed on such interactive computer tasks beginning with the 2009 science assessment.

Because these assessments and studies will be conducted at the national level only, there will be no state results reported. National results for the arts and long-term trend assessments will be available in 2009.
