Basic Information

Every time you flip on a switch, drive somewhere in your car, or turn on your stove, you are consuming energy. The resources and processes used to produce this energy can affect the environment in many ways, often by polluting our air or water resources. We work with many partners to promote the responsible use of energy resources and enhance our nation's energy security.

For example, the ENERGY STAR Program helped Americans save enough energy to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 25 million cars, a savings of $14 billion on their utility bills in 2006.

We also regulate the production and use of energy to enhance environmental protection. For example, EPA's Heavy-Duty Diesel Rule (the 2007 Highway Rule) will reduce smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions by 2.6 million tons each year and particulate matter by 111,000 tons per year when fully implemented.
