Fact of the Day

Population Estimates

According to the Census Bureau's population estimates as of July 1, 2005, Florida experienced the largest numerical population increase between 2004 and 2005, as its population rose by 404,000 people. Texas was not far behind, gaining 388,000. The five states with the largest numerical growth (Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, and Georgia) accounted for more than one-half (52 percent) of the nation's population growth from 2004 to 2005. The South recorded both the largest numerical population increase (1.5 million) and the fastest rate of growth (1.4 percent) among regions between 2004 and 2005. These population estimates are for the July 1, 2005, date and, thus, do not include the impact of Hurricane Katrina, which occurred after the July date. See the population estimates website for more information.

Improve Your Data Searches in American FactFinder!

The "About the Data" tab on the left side of American FactFinder (AFF) home page is a good resource for both the beginner and the seasoned data user. Learn, or refresh your memory, about the types of tables and maps you can choose in AFF. For example, do you remember how Geographic Comparison Tables differ from Detailed Tables or from Quick Tables? Or how Thematic Maps differ from Reference Maps? You don't need to be an expert to learn the differences, so take a few minutes to read over the definitions and the examples shown -- this will ensure you are getting the most out of your data requests from AFF.

The "About the Data" tab also lists the Census Bureau programs which provide data in American FactFinder. From each program listing, click "More" to read an explanation of the program, or click "Get Data" to begin to generate information in AFF from that particular program. You'll also see a handy link to a comprehensive list of surveys the Census Bureau conducts.

Spend a few minutes in this handy "About the Data" tab and it will pay dividends in your data searches!

Filters Are Critical in 2002 Economic Census Data in FactFinder

Even if you are a regular American FactFinder user, you still might find as few surprises when you first try to access the 2002 Economic Census in AFF. Filters are more critical in accessing the Economic Census data than in accessing other data sets (for example, the Census 2000 Summary files or the American Community Survey). Let's give an example. Suppose you want information on the establishments selling prescription drugs and their revenues for each state.
Here are the steps:

This gives you the retail industries that sell prescription drugs and their number of establishments, revenues, etc. The filters in AFF further allow you to sift the numbers so you can target information more specifically.
