2002 Business Expenses Survey -- For American retail businesses, 7 percent of their operating costs in 2002 were attributable to fringe benefits and 5 percent to purchased advertising, according to the latest national data on operating expenses of wholesale, retail, and service businesses. Such statistics can be found in this survey conducted every five years as part of the economic census. Sorted by industry, the data include other items such as payroll, utilities, rent, purchased services and computer-related expenses. Internet address: <http://www.census.gov/csd/bes/>.
