11-30-2005: Hog Island/Newton Creek Project
Cleanup of Newton Creek and Hog Island Inlet, a joint project of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is underway. Work began in July and the sediment cleanup portion was completed in November 2005.

03-09-2005: Detroit River's Black Lagoon Cleanup
The Black Lagoon on the Detroit River in Trenton, Michigan, will be the first contaminated sediment site to be cleaned up under the Great Lakes Legacy Act. This is a joint project between U.S. EPA - Great Lakes National Program Office and Michigan Department of Water Quality - Water Bureau, funded by the Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2002 and the Clean Michigan Initiative of 1998

05-07-2004: Phase II Investigation of Sediment Contamination in White Lake
A Phase II investigation of the nature and extent of sediment contamination in White Lake was performed. Sediment chemistry, solid-phase toxicity, and benthic macroinvertebrates were examined at 21 locations. Since chromium was previously identified as the major contaminant in the sediments, experiments were conducted to determine the accumulation of the metal in zebra mussels, macrophytes, and chironomids.

Native plants provide a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance landscape while benefiting the environment. This Annotated Slide Collection contains fifty slides selected for their ability to define natural landscaping and explain its benefits, to illustrate applications of natural landscaping, and to demonstrate installation and management techniques.

01-16-2004: North Branch Restoration Project Seed Book
The North Branch Restoration Project is a volunteer organization working to restore and manage the few remaining savannas, woodlands, forests and prairies along the North Branch of the Chicago River in the Cook County Forest Preserves. The volunteers assist the Forest Preserve District of Cook County and other agencies in protecting and restoring native Illinois ecosystems.

11-06-2003: Request for Proposals: Use the R/V Lake Guardian to Conduct an Educational Course on the Great Lakes

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO), is requesting proposals for use of the R/V Lake Guardian during June or July of 2004, to conduct an educational course on the Great Lakes. Courses should be designed to teach undergraduates, graduate students, or teachers about the physical, chemical, and biological components of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

09-24-2003: Report of The Niagara River Toxics Committee, October 1984
The mutual concern of both Canadian and United States environmental agencies regarding the water quality of the Niagara River resulted in a decision to cooperate in a joint investigation of the toxic chemicals entering the Niagara River.

09-23-2003: Post-Remediation Sediment Sampling on the Raisin River Near Monroe
In 2001 and 2002 the Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO), in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Detroit District and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality conducted an extensive survey of sediment quality conditions within the Raisin River Area of Concern (AOC). The focus of the survey was to evaluate the levels of polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCB) contamination remaining in the area of the Ford-Monroe sediment removal project completed in 1997.

October 2000 and August 2002 Survey of Sediment Contamination in the Chicago River - Chicago, Illinois
In October 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) coordinated a baseline screening study to provide a broad view of sediment conditions throughout the Chicago River system, specifically the North and South Branch, while targeting depositional zones within the river.

09-04-2003: Sampling and Analytical Procedures for GLNPO’s Open Lake Water Quality Survey of the Great Lakes
The Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has primary responsibility within the U.S. for conducting surveillance monitoring of the offshore waters of the Great Lakes. This monitoring is intended to fulfill provisions of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (International Joint Commission, 1978) calling for periodic monitoring of the lakes. Most of the survey activities are conducted onboard EPA’s R/V Lake Guardian.

09-03-2003: Quality Management Plan for Great Lakes National Program Office
Great Lakes National Program Office’s (GLNPO’s) quality system is defined in its Quality Management Plan (QMP). The QMP is a management tool that describes how GLNPO will plan, implement, document, and assess its quality system to support its mission. The document also communicates the policy and provides guidance on GLNPO’s quality management system to all personnel associated with GLNPO. The document has been approved by GLNPO management and USEPA's Office of Environmental Information's (OEI) Quality Staff. GLNPO is a geographically-focused office, whose mission is to lead and coordinate United States efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes.

08-28-2003: Results of the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study: Atrazine Data Report
The Lake Michigan Mass Balance (LMMB) Study measured and modeled the concentrations of representative pollutants within important compartments of the Lake Michigan ecosystem. The goal of the LMMB Study was to develop a sound, scientific base of information to guide future toxic load reduction efforts. The LMMB Study measured the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), trans-nonachlor, atrazine, and mercury in the atmosphere, tributaries, lake water, sediments, and food webs of Lake Michigan.

08-27-2003: Assessment of Sediments in the Buffalo River Area of Concern
The purpose of this report is to summarize and analyze the existing Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (ARCS) sediment data from the Buffalo River Area of Concern area of concern (AOC), in order to aid conclusions regarding the nature and extent of sediment contamination within the AOC. The report brings together data from two sampling surveys that have not been provided in a single source or in comparable formats. (EPA-905-R96-011)

08-26-2003: Final Report of the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels Study - Volume 2
This Report provides the major findings and recommendations of the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels Study (UGLCCS). The study was first announced as a U.S. Program in November, 1983 by then United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) Administrator, William Ruckelshaus. In July, 1984 it became a multi-agency U.S./Canada investigation of toxic chemicals and other environmental concerns in the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels. The study area included the Detroit, St. Clair and St. Marys Rivers and Lake St. Clair.

08-19-2003: The Blue Creek Project: An Agricultural Wetland Demonstration Project; The primary goal of the project was to demonstrate how wetlands in agriculturally dominated landscapes can filter pollutants contained in agricultural runoff and reduce soil erosion resulting in cleaner lakes, rivers, and streams. Additionally, the project provided research and educational opportunities, reduced flood damage, and enhanced wildlife habitat. The wetlands are being monitored presently for their effectiveness in removing phosphorous and sediments, thereby improving water quality. The project is serving as a demonstration in the Maumee River Basin.

08-12-2003: The executive summary of the major findings and recommendations of the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels Study (UGLCCS). These findings and recommendations are based upon data collected in 1985 and 1986. Initiated in late 1983 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, UGLCCS became a full bilateral multi-agency investigation in July 1984.

Between 1992 and 2001, more than $17 million was awarded and leveraged for 106 projects to protect, restore, inventory, assess, classify, monitor, and study more than 17 million acres of the Great Lakes basin.

06-09-2003: The third edition of the Great Lakes: An Environmental Atlas and Resource Book consists of a revision and update of the original document produced by Environment Canada, United States Environmental Protection Agency (English-language and French-language). Order the beautiful hard-copy version on-line.; Selections of Proposals submitted to the USEPA Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) FY2003-2004 competitive grants process have been made. Earlier this year in response to GLNPO's solicitation for $4.8 million in projects, applicants submitted 340 proposals totaling $28.5 million. 92 projects have been selected.

04-14-03: The R/V Lake Guardian is USEPA's largest monitoring ship. It is operated exclusively on the Great Lakes and is the only self-contained, non-polluting research vessel on the Great Lakes.
(1) The R/V Lake Guardian is currently underway performing the Spring 2003 Survey of the Great Lakes
(2) Safety Aboard the Lake Guardian is an all-inclusive video orientation to the R/V Lake Guardian that is required viewing for all first-time and Non-EPA researchers to the R/V Lake Guardian.

03-12-2003: Reestablishing the Freshwater Unionid Population of Metzger Marsh, Lake Erie
One of the most devastating ecological problems resulting from the recent invasion of North America by zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) has been the virtual elimination of native clams or unionids from infested waters. Zebra mussels readily colonize clam shells, disrupting feeding, movement, and reproduction. Clams generally die within 1-2 years after infestation. This die-off has been well-documented in the Great Lakes (Schloesser and Nalepa, 1994; Schloesser et al. 1996), with near total mortality reported throughout most of western Lake Erie. However, in 1996, we discovered a large population of native clams in a western Lake Erie wetland, Metzger Marsh, that showed little sign of infestation despite zebra mussel colonization of the site since about 1990.

The goal of the project was to restore habitat in the Buffalo River Watershed, specifically Cazenovia Creek, and to institute a perpetual community-level stewardship resource for its continual protection.

This report present results of GLNPO’s biological surveillance sampling program from all five Laurentian Great Lakes. Our goal here is to provide a general description of the offshore planktonic and the benthic communities of all five Great Lakes from GLNPO’s 1999 surveys. It also presents information detailing the use of benthos data for the assessment of the ecological health of the Great Lakes.

12-19-2002: Ecological Screening-Level Risk Assessment of the Lower Ottawa River
The Ottawa River Risk Assessment project was started in late 1999 as a partnership between Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG), Ohio EPA, and the Maumee RAP. It was completed in November 2001. Since 1987 when the RAP was established, businesses and governmental agencies have invested millions of dollars to identify and remediate sources of pollution going into the Ottawa River in Toledo. With those sources removed, the next step in restoration of the river is with the sediments.
