Research Project: IMPROVED MELON FLY ATTACTANTS FOR DETECTION AND CONTROL

Location: Tropical Plant Pests Research

2006 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a trust agreement between ARS and Hawaii State Deparmtment of Agriculture. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 5320-22430-021-00D, Detection, Control and Areawide Management of Fruit Flies.

Studies on the efficacy of the new male lure, Melolure (Raspberry Ketone Formate) were carried out against wild melon fly populations on the island of Hawaii. A new controlled-release formulation developed as part of a CRADA with a commercial company was tested and found to capture as many flies as the liquid formulation on cotton wicks. The new formulations will be easier to deploy and standardized the dose of attractant used in detection programs against melon fly.
