Research Project:
IMPROVED MELON FLY ATTACTANTS FOR DETECTION AND CONTROL
Location: Tropical Plant Pests Research
Project Number: 5320-22430-021-11
Project Type:
Trust
Start Date: May 01, 2006
End Date: Oct 01, 2009
Objective:
1)Information on the efficacy of melolure to attract & kill melon fly when used in conjuction with an effective toxicant, 2)information on the synthesis of melolure including possible contaminants in the manufacturing process, and 3)information on the environmental fate of melolure. This information is needed on this new lure before it can be considered for registration by EPA.
Approach:
Efficacy studies to develop information on the effectiveness of melolure as a male attractant against melon fly. 1)Compare melolure to verify it's superiority to cuelure and 2)test melolure in a novel controlled-release matrix in the field. Product chemistry-collaborate with chemists making melolure to detail the manufacturing process to the extent possible while still respecting proprietary manufacturing processes. Outline how melolure is made & identify the purity of the final product including contaminants greater than 1% in the final product. Environmental fate-develop preliminary information on the by products of melolure volatization using controlled laboratory studies (solid phase microextraction of headspace volatiles and identify volatile products over time using gas chromatography and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry). Documents Reimbursable with HDOA. Log #26997.
