December 18, 2007 October 2007 Passenger Airline Employment Up 3.5 Percent from October 2006
U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 3.5 percent more workers in October 2007 than in October 2006, the ninth consecutive increase in full-time equivalent employee (FTE) levels for the scheduled passenger carriers from the same month of the previous year, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today.  FTE calculations count two part-time employees as one full-time employee.
December 17, 2007 Third-Quarter 2007 System Airline Financial Data: Passenger Airlines Report Most Profitable Third Quarter Since 1999
A group of 20 selected passenger airlines reported a system operating profit margin of 8.2 percent in the third quarter of 2007, the highest third quarter profit margin since 1999 and the first time since 2000 that airlines have had six consecutive profitable quarters, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation reported today in a release of preliminary data. The 20-carrier group consists of the seven largest network, low-cost and regional carriers based on operating revenue.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has developed an innovative software tool, called GeoMiler, that is helping researchers better estimate freight travel. GeoMiler is being used to compute mileages along likely routes for the nearly 6 million freight shipments expected to be reported in the 2007 Commodity Flow Survey (CFS), the nation’s largest survey of freight movements (Revised Figure 3, page 6, on 7/16/07).

This technical directive replaces Technical Directive #14. The purpose of the directive is to clarify the reporting of gate departure time when a flight returns to the gate. A survey of some reporting carriers revealed that there was not uniformity in reporting instances when departing flights returned to the gate and then departed the gate a second time. The gate departure time that should be reported is the time when the aircraft first left the departure gate.
