SURVEY OF INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Survey of Industrial Research and Development is to provide statistics on research and development by American industry. The Census Bureau serves as the collecting and compiling agent for the Survey of Iindustrial Research and Development under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The survey is authorized by the National Science Foundation Act of 1950, as amended. Data confidentiality is protected under Title 13 of the U.S. Code.

COVERAGE

Companies in for-profit businesses.

CONTENT

The Survey of Industrial Research and Development includes approximately 25,000 companies selected from the Business Register (BR). Companies with $5 million or more in R&D are included in the frame as certainties, while other companies are assigned probabilities of selection. Company records from the frame where total sum of prior year employment is less than 5 are deleted. The survey assigns a 4-digit NAICS code to each company, based upon payroll. Publication tables use these classifications. Data are reported for activity taking place during the survey calendar year.

FREQUENCY

The survey is conducted annually.

METHODS

The Census Bureau provides aggregate statistics to the NSF who has primary responsibility for releasing the data.

PRODUCTS

There are no derivative products of the survey of industrial research and development.

USES

The NSF and policymaking agencies within the Office of Management and Budget, Treasury Department, Department of Energy, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Congress are the primary users of these data.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The results of the R&D survey are used, along with the Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) for updating the Longitudinal Research Database (LRD). The LRD is used by Census Bureau staff and outside researchers on sworn agent status for microdata analysis.
