Future Plans

Substance Registry Services (SRS) is a one-stop resource for discovering information about the chemicals and biological organisms that are tracked or regulated at EPA. The goal for the SRS is to expand this service across the federal government.

Other federal agencies, such as the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Department of Agriculture (DOA), collect information about substances. To help the public find information about chemicals, whether it is EPA data about benzene emissions from a smokestack or U.S. Air Force data about ethylene glycol use at air bases, the EPA’s SRS must have linkages to the information maintained in other federal agencies’ systems.

This effort already is underway. The U.S. Army, for example, is utilizing the SRS for its substance identification; a goal will be to link the SRS with the U.S. Army system. Another federal agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a sophisticated substance registry system to catalogue the many chemicals that are regulated as active or inactive ingredients in drugs. Linking the EPA SRS and the FDA SRS would be an invaluable resource for the public.
