NSSGA is the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. On Feb. 12, 2001, the merged National Stone Association and National Aggregates Association became the NSSGA. The association represents the crushed stone, sand and gravel-or aggregates-industries. Our member companies produce more than 92 percent of the crushed stone and 75 percent of the sand and gravel consumed annually in the United States. More than three billion tons of aggregates (or 2.56 billion metric tons) were produced in 2007 at a value of approximately $21.5 billion, contributing nearly $40 billion to the GDP of the United States. The aggregates industry workforce is made up of about 118,000 men and women. Every $1 million in aggregate sales creates 19.5 jobs, and every dollar of industry output returns $1.58 to the economy.   more...

NSSGA CREATES GREENHOUSE GAS PROTOCOL FOR AGGREGATES AND PULVERIZED MINERALS FACILITIES
Amid growing state efforts, and in anticipation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to establish mandatory greenhouse gas registries (GHG), NSSGA’s Environmental Committee has developed a GHG calculator to help aggregates and pulverized minerals producers calculate emissions of GHGs in an accurate, consistent and verifiable manner. Using this spreadsheet-type protocol, NSSGA member companies can determine if their emissions are above future regulatory and Congressional thresholds and can participate in voluntary emission registry programs...details

Sustainability
NSSGA is pleased to offer our members several new items from NSSGA that help strengthen our industry’s contribution and commitment to the communities in which we operate.

NSSGA’s Guiding Principles for Sustainability, approved by our Board of Directors in July of 2007, sets the vision for our industry through our commitment to our communities, to environmental stewardship, to social responsibility and to economic prosperity.

The following tools can be ordered via this link for your company’s use in neighborhoods, for luncheon addresses at the local Chamber or Rotary, in your open houses, within your workforce, for helping introduce your company and the industry to local and state government officials, with customer groups, local media and with area schools:
  • A 6-minute video that highlights our industry’s contributions to a safe and healthy workforce, effective community relations, environmental compliance and efficient, productive aggregate operations for a sustainable society.
  • A tri-fold brochure that is a simple check-list to help you track your company’s or your operation’s progress toward sustainability. It is also a great piece to use with your own community relations programs to demonstrate our commitment to improving our industry’s image.
  • A 22-page sustainability booklet is a more in-depth discussion highlighting the activities of NSSGA and the industry’s contributions to sustainability.
Sustainability is not simply a catchword any longer. It is a value of our association. Sustainability means we care about people; we care about our environment; and we care about making products that help build America’s economy.

The members of NSSGA have a good story to tell the American people about the aggregates industry. I hope you will join us in delivering this message!

Community Relations Handbook for the Aggregates Industry
Members of NSSGA have a good story to tell the American people about the aggregates industry. Crushed stone, sand and gravel truly are the basic materials in practically everything that makes modern life possible and enjoyable. But many people in communities where aggregate producers operate do not have a clear picture of the economic and societal benefits associated with those operations.

Conveying this information to the communities in which we live and operate, and how we communicate it, is fundamental to our ability to remain in business. NSSGA's newly designed and updated Community Relations Handbook focuses on the "how-to's" of building positive, long-term relationships between operations and the community, and describes successful and tested methods of gaining the good will of neighbors through two-way communications.

The new handbook also includes four supplements: Answering Community Concerns About Blasting, Answering Community Concerns About Dust and Noise, Answering Community Concerns About Truck Traffic, and Hosting and Open House or Operation Tour. A $95 value. For NSSGA members, only $75...order your copy today!
