ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 7— Kevin Davis, safety coordinator for Miles Sand & Gravel, Auburn, Wash., has been named NSSGA's James M. Christie Safety and Health Professional. The award will be presented at NSSGA's Honors Awards ceremony on Monday, March 9, 2009, in Orlando, Fla., in conjunction with its 2009 Annual Convention.

Davis' leadership has led to reductions in levels of accidents and injuries at Miles Sand & Gravel. He provides training, guidance and counseling to all company employees; he launched and continues to manage several safety committees. Davis works collaboratively with all departments and has seamlessly woven his successful strategy for safety into the company's production planning. Because of his contributions, Miles Sand & Gravel has received numerous Certificates of Achievement from the U.S. Mine Safety Health Administration and from the Joseph A. Holmes Association for hours worked without lost-time injuries.

In addition, Davis is a substantial contributor to the efforts of the aggregates industry toward proactive safety practices. As a member of Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire's Industrial Safety & Health programs, and its Panel on Mines, Quarries, Cement and Mineral Aggregates, Davis actively supports the collaboration undertaken by industry and government to enhance workplace safety for miners. He also serves on the safety committee of the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association, where he helps provide refresher training on safety issues to more than 700 miners.

"Kevin's enthusiastic work to boost safety for all around him is a great example of the aggregates industry's commitment to worker safety celebrated by the James M. Christie Award," said NSSGA President & CEO Joy Wilson. She continued, "Kevin has made a substantial impact not only on his company, but on workers throughout the state of Washington. "

Anne Kelhart, director of safety and human resources for Martin Stone Quarries, and chair of NSSGA's Safety & Health Committee, said, "Kevin's achievements stand as a clear illustration of our industry's commitment to eliminate injuries and fatalities in support of one of our most important guiding principles: to prevent all occupational injuries and illnesses."

The James M. Christie Safety and Health Professional of the Year award was created in 1987 to provide national recognition to an individual who has made superior and substantial contributions to his or her company's—and the industry's—efforts toward proactive safe operating practices.

Based near the nation's capital, NSSGA is the world's largest mining association by product volume. Its member companies represent more than 90 percent of the crushed stone and 70 percent of the sand and gravel produced annually in the U.S. and approximately 118,000 working men and women in the aggregates industry. During 2007, a total of about 2.56 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel, valued at $21 billion, were produced and sold in the United States.
