On December 26. 2004, a devastating earthquake, off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, caused massive tsunamis in several countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, as well as Somalia, Tanzania, and Kenya in East Africa. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale -- making it the largest quake worldwide in four decades. The confirmed number of people killed in the massive earthquake and tidak waves that struck Indian Ocean shorelines at the weekend passed 80,000 amid warnings the true toll could be far higher.
