The U.S. Department of Commerce/ U. S. Export Assistance Center located in Houston, Texas offers year round student volunteer internship opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students.
Located in the Mickey Leland Federal building in downtown Houston, we are part of the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service, an extensive network of trade specialists located throughout the world devoted to assisting U.S. companies expand their international business presence. Our office provides services to 31 counties in the Houston Metro and surrounding areas with offices in 105 cities throughout the U.S. and in more than 150 cities around the world.
Our trade experts assist U.S. firms in exporting their products/services by providing comprehensive counseling and advice, through timely and accurate intelligence regarding foreign markets, by identifying qualified international buyers and representatives, by advocating on their behalf, and by providing comprehensive solutions to whatever challenges they may encounter.

International Trade Assistants (Student Volunteers) work directly with our trade experts, providing assistance in various areas of business.
- Research- country/international market research, statstics, market intelligence
- Counseling- respond to telephone inquiries from exporters regarding trade requirements, regulations, documentation, country issues, etc.
- Public Relations- export leads, cold calling, meeting planning, various marketing projects
- Database Management- data-entry, follow-up, maintenance
- Web/Graphic Design- Website maintenance, flyers, brochures, trade show signs, etc.
- Administrative- answering phones, correspondence preparation, faxing, typing, emailing current and potential clients
- Special Projects- trade shows, official visits, seminars

Am I eligible?
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- U.S. Citizen
- Currently enrolled full-time or part-time in a graduate or undergraduate program
- Available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week
- Good interpersonal and writing skills
- Computer skills- Windows XP or higher, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer- knowledge of Lotus Notes helpful, but not required
- Able to successfully complete background check
