أغلقت مراكز الاقتراع في ولايتي كنتاكي الواقعة في الجزء الشرقي وانديانيا في الشمال الثلاثاء عند الساعة 23.00 بتوقيت غرينتش ابوابها وأظهرت النتائج أن ماكين فاز في ولاية كنتاكي التي يمثلها ثمانية من الناخبين الكبار في الوقت الذي فاز فيه أوباما بولاية فيرمونت التي يمثلها ثلاثة من الناخبين الكبار كما فاز ماكين بولاية ساوث كارولاينا التي يمثلها ثمانية من الناخبين الكبار. مما يذكر أنه يتعين حصول أي من المرشحين على أصوات 270 من الناخبين الكبار كي يفوز في الإنتخابات الرئاسية.
