Evidence-Based Disability and Disease Prevention for Elders

Staying Healthy at 50+

Presenter:

Janelle Guirguis-Blake, M.D., Program Director, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, Center for Primary Care, Prevention and Clinical Partnerships/AHRQ, Rockville, MD.

This session provided an overview of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) evidence-based recommendations for preventive services for elders. USPTF is an independent panel of experts in primary care and prevention that systematically reviews the evidence of effectiveness and develops recommendations for clinical preventive services. The Task Force was convened by the Public Health Service to rigorously evaluate clinical research in order to assess the merits of preventive measures, including screening tests, counseling, and chemoprophylaxis.

Recommendations from the Task Force are being released incrementally, as they become available, and are available on AHRQ's Web site at http://preventiveservices.ahrq.gov.

The session also highlighted AHRQ's Staying Healthy at 50+ materials. The information in Staying Healthy at 50+ comes from the research-based recommendations of the USPSTF and is aimed at helping older Americans understand and incorporate preventive care into their lives.

Staying Healthy at 50+ includes tips and recommendations on health habits, screening tests, and immunizations. The guide includes easy-to-use charts to help track personal health information, questions to ask health care providers, and resources to contact for additional health information.
