USGS Discusses Fish and Amphibians at Paired Watershed Conference, October 13-14 - Corvallis, Oregon
USGS scientists are partners in the interagency Watersheds Research Cooperative (WRC) and will present preliminary research results at the Conference on Paired Watershed Studies. The WRC studies the effects of current forest management on aquatic ecosystems. Jason Dunham will present "Learning about Pattern and Process across Scales." Preliminary findings indicate that fish species vary substantially within one watershed and that sampling efficiency of traditional methods is low. Work is in progress to understand if other species affect how native cutthroat trout respond to forestry practices and to develop more precise methods to estimate populations. Mike Adams will present "The Impact of Forest Practices on Stream Amphibians." Numerous studies have addressed the responses of stream amphibians in managed forests, but current studies will describe differences in the distribution of amphibians over time and correlate those differences with changes in the environment.
