Matthew Friedrich
In May of 2008, Matthew W. Friedrich was designated by the President to serve as the Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division.
As the Acting Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Friedrich supervises the enforcement of federal criminal laws and policy for the Department of Justice, and supervises criminal prosecutions by the Division's more than 450 prosecutors on a broad range of matters including public corruption, corporate fraud, procurement fraud, computer crime, intellectual property crime, international organized crime, gang crime, narcotics offenses, money laundering offenses, child sexual exploitation, and human rights violations.
Until his designation, Mr. Friedrich served as the Deputy Chief of Staff to Attorney General Michael Mukasey. During 2006 and 2007, Mr. Friedrich also served as a Counselor to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and to acting Attorney General Peter Keisler.
Mr. Friedrich joined the Department in 1995. He spent ten years as a line prosecutor, concentrating on financial crimes and public corruption. Mr. Friedrich is a recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service for his work on the Enron Task Force, and the Director's Award for Superior Performance from the Executive Office of United States Attorneys for his prosecution of two Pentagon officials for corruption-related offenses.
During his tenure with the Department, Mr. Friedrich has served in the Criminal Division in various capacities. From December 2005 to October 2006, Mr. Friedrich served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Chief of Staff of the Criminal Division. As an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. Friedrich was detailed to the Division's Campaign Financing Task Force (1999-2001), and the Enron Task Force (2002, 2004-2005).
In 1998, Mr. Friedrich became an Assistant United States Attorney, serving in the Eastern District of Texas and in the Eastern District of Virginia. From 1995-1998, Mr. Friedrich was a prosecutor in the Tax Division.
From 1994-1995, Mr. Friedrich was a law clerk for United States District Judge Royal Furgeson in the Western District of Texas. He is a graduate of the University of Texas (J.D.) and the University of Virginia (B.A.). |
