Topics include physics of sound, effects of noise, occupational noise standards, noise instrumentation and measurement, frequency analysis, noise control techniques, hearing conservation, audiology, and current OSHA noise compliance policy and inspection procedures.
  • Manual Audiometer Computer Simulator User Gizmo (MACSUG). National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Glenn Research Center Acoustical Testing Laboratory. Provides hearing conservation and audiology educators with an educational resource for simulating and illustrating techniques and principles of manual audiometry and audiogram review.   • American Academy of Audiology (AAA). Promotes quality hearing and balance care by advancing the profession of audiology through leadership, advocacy, education, public awareness and support of research.
    • Consumer Guides. Includes topics such as coping with hearing loss, hearing aid FAQs, aural mechanics, how we hear, and selecting hearing aids.
    • Understanding Your Audiogram. Displays visually the results of a hearing test and analyzes the results of the example audiogram.
  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Promotes the interests of and provides the highest quality services for professionals in audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech and hearing science, and advocates for people with communication disabilities.

  • Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC). Provides education, information and guidance to industry and those serving industry regarding the successful implementation of an occupational hearing conservation program. It seeks to prevent occupational hearing loss.
    • Suter A. Hearing conservation manual. 4th ed. Berger E, editor. Milwaukee (WI): Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC); 2000. Contains invaluable information and significant revisions including how to set-up and maintain a hearing conservation program, how the hearing conservation team works to prevent hearing loss, updated and expanded regulatory information from OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and more.

  • Kravets D. Court cases involving hearing-impaired or deaf workers. San Francisco Chronicle. 2006 Oct 10. Reports that the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with US District Judge Thelton Henderson's 2004 ruling that UPS' practices breach the Americans with Disabilities Act by automatically barring the deaf and hearing-impaired from driving parcel delivery trucks. In 2003, under a $10 million settlement, UPS agreed to track promotions and ensure that hearing-impaired employees and job applicants have access to certified interpreters. The company also agreed to provide text telephones and vibrating pagers to alert poor-hearing employees to emergency evacuations.
